Impossible? Not in our vocabulary.
The concept – a wall system made up of thin strips of steel laminated with a wood-look vinyl. Each piece would need to measure about 12’-0” high by 5” wide, only ¼” thick AND they would need to be self-supportive. Wait, WHAT? Well….. The steel was very costly, very heavy (about 80 pounds per piece), and would still bow at that length. The project just couldn’t support the cost and the structure was not designed to support that much weight. Our magic wand broke that day, but luckily, we had a backup plan. By making a material adjustment to 1” MDF edged with aluminum channels, we were able to reduce the weight, pull off the height, and make each piece self-supportive. The finished pieces ended up being thicker than the original concept, but sometimes you have to give a little to get a lot!
